Babies, toddlers engage in sign language classes
February 13, 2012 /
Nine-month-old Gary Cox couldn’t talk, but he let his mother know when he wanted more milk or if his soiled diaper needed changing.
Six-month-old Sophia Jo Schreiner can’t speak a syllable, but she is on pace to ask for "more" and let Mom know when she wants to "eat."
Gary and Sophia are among the growing number of children throughout the U.S. who have enrolled in American Sign Language classes. Sign language, once considered the sole province of the deaf, is enjoying a renaissance of sorts as parents grasp the concept that they can understand their child’s needs long before they can talk.
