‘Silicon Prairie’ fertile ground for online business – Bozeman’s profile in the technology world has steadily risen over the years.

Home to technology companies such as Zoot Enterprises and RightNow Technologies and noteworthy startups like Schedulicity, Bozeman has garnered the nickname "Silicon Prairie."

But it wasn’t always as easy as coming up with an idea, hopping on a computer and getting started, said Joe Long, co-founder of Bridgeband Communications, one of the first companies in the area to sell broadband and high-capacity Internet services.

"I had to start a company to get DSL," Long said. "That’s the way we do things in Montana. If you need something and you can’t buy it, then you make it."
