Red Lodge, Montana craftsman applies science in creating spoons – Earlywood

Brad Bernhart was a mechanical engineering student at Montana State University, and to unwind he’d go out to the little shop behind the house he and his wife rented in Bozeman and carve wooden spoons.

"I’ve always been kind of artistic," he said.

Working with his hands, shaping out a design was relaxing in its own way. And the spoons he was creating were stylish enough to catch the eyes of friends and family.

Now, five years later, he’s launched his own company, Earlywood http://earlywooddesigns.com/ , and started selling his wooden kitchen utensils online and from a little shop in Red Lodge called — appropriately enough — the Swanky Fork.
