Rural nature of Montana presents challenges in helping veterans find work

Recent measures aim to give veterans a leg up on finding work, but the makeup of the Treasure state could present some obstacles in their search.

16% of the state’s adult population is made up of veterans and of that, 20% are reportedly unemployed.

The VOW to Hire Heroes Act offers tax credits to businesses that hire veterans, but according to Montana Labor commissioner Keith Kelly, the rural nature of the state presents challenges when matching veterans with their dream job.

Kelly said, "One has to keep in mind finite number of jobs that one is competing for. This probably means they can get some training to help have a better shot at that job, but the key is growing the economy so the number of jobs out there for everybody to go after including the veterans is a little bit bigger pie."
