OUTDOORS: Montana inspires wandering and wondering

Step from the woods, the edge of the Ponderosa pines to a western Montana river, and the smell of crushed sage and minty pennyroyal wafts over your waders.

The river ahead, whether it’s the Blackfoot, Bitterroot, Clark Fork or thinner Rock Creek, is clear, golden and full of trout. In the fall, rose-bellied West-slope cutthroats, rainbows and browns rise to terrestrials, mayflies and caddis as they sup on the rich potpourri of insect life in the mountains and river plains.
