Roy, Montana -Winifred, Montana schools learn to share teams, superintendent

It used to be that the Roy Pirates and Winifred Red Raiders were fierce competitors. Located in the same District 7C area of northcentral Montana, the two schools competed against each other in everything from volleyball to basketball.

But now, after school enrollment in both communities dwindled, the 40 miles that separate the schools and once divided them on the court seems like just a few miles. The two separate school districts now not only have formed a co-op for all of their sports — to become the Roy-Winifred Outlaws — but they also share a superintendent.

"It is a challenge," said Dustin Sturm, superintendent of both school districts, as well as a part-time bus driver, cook, athletic director, driver’s education teacher, lawn attendant and more. "(But) right now, yes it is ideal."
