Researchers at Rocky Mountain Labs in Hamilton, Montana make progress on Hendra, trachoma vaccines

Researchers at Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton have made important contributions to the progress of developing a vaccine for trachoma and an antibody for the Hendra virus, both high-profile debilitating diseases, and have recently released their findings in scientific publications.

The Hendra virus is classified as a Biohazard Level 4, the highest risk level, meaning there is no known cure and it is fatal to humans. It is genetically similar to the Nipah virus, which was featured in the new Hollywood movie "Contagion."

On Oct. 10, the Journal of Experimental Medicine published a report on how research conducted on monkeys by RML scientists showed that a weakened strain of the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis can prevent or reduce the severity of trachoma, the world’s leading cause of blindness.
