Hall Passages: Hellgate Elementary students make leap in learning

Leaving no child behind is one thing to promise – but quite another to do.

So when the Hellgate Elementary School District saw that too many of its children were behind in reading and mathematics, it did something more than shout slogans.

It did something about it. And it worked.

"The best part of this thing is that our kids are making academic progress," said Doug Reisig, 12-year superintendent of Hellgate Elementary, the oldest school district in western Montana.

What "thing"? A concerted effort to reach the children who had fallen behind in core subjects, and who often came from the population of children living in poverty – at 40 percent, high even by Montana standards.
