University of Montana Student Internships Launch Careers

Nick Ferrington is proof that internships help create strong resumes, career direction, and even
once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

As Nick worked toward his B.A. in Communications Studies with a Media Arts minor and his Entertainment Management certificate, he was also very busy honing his expertise in sports and entertainment marketing and management. While enrolled as a student, he participated in four internships, worked part-time for Concert Productions and served as Vice President for Event Programming for Sigma Phi Epsilon.

During Nick’s internship with UM Productions he assisted with production riders and managed the green room/dressing room set up for some of the biggest musical acts to play Missoula – The Rolling Stones, Dierks Bentley and Modest Mouse. As a two-time participant in Disney’s College Program, Nick interned with Cirque du Soleil, where he assisted with show production and venue management, as well as audience control and box office sales.

From there, Nick jumped into the world of sports marketing as an intern with the Boston Celtics, interfacing with guests, players and management. The internship required Nick to put in 40+ hour work weeks and be at every home game. This "work requirement" not only made Nick very happy, it also gave him access to the inner-workings of one of the nation’s legendary professional sports teams.

Nick, originally from Whitefish, loves living in Boston but he says, "I am open to going wherever a great job may be." He is currently being considered for positions at IBM, House of Blues Entertainment, and the Boston Bruins. Stay tuned!

Nick Ferrington at Celtics’ ArenaSince its beginning 30 years ago, the SoBA Internship Program has helped thousands of UM students and employers achieve success. Over the past five years alone, SoBA interns have worked a total of 179,650 hours for 919 employers earning a total of $3,240,411. Approximately 220 SoBA students take advantage of credit-bearing internship opportunities each year.

The SoBA Internship Program is designed to provide internships that are mutually beneficial to students and employers. Students gain work experience, develop a professional network, and can apply classroom learning in the real world. Internships provide employers with a cost-effective, low-risk strategy for attracting high-quality prospective employees.
