Oxx in a box: Red Oxx imagines using shipping containers to build business campus that could revive east end in Billings, Montana

Jim Markel might look like a kid playing with a toy train set, but he is a businessman with big plans.

The units he’s busy stacking and reconfiguring aren’t scale-model trains. They are small replicas of steel shipping containers that Markel would like to use to expand his booming luggage business, Red Oxx Manufacturing http://www.redoxx.com/ , on the east end of downtown Billings.

He envisions eventually creating a campus of businesses similar to his — light manufacturers that do most of their commerce on the Internet — and he’d like to use shipping containers to create ground-floor commercial spaces with affordable housing on the upper floors.
