Algae Aquaculture Technology Inc. – Columbia Falls, Montana – Turning algae into energy: Biorefinery plant exploring new technology

By all outward appearances, Michael Smith has spent a great deal of time and money manufacturing pond scum.

But one man’s refuse is another man’s riches, and to hear Smith explain it, the algae he’s growing at a biorefinery plant in Columbia Falls has vast potential as an innovative energy technology.

Smith is president and co-founder of Algae Aquaculture Technology Inc. http://algaeaqua.com/AACT/Welcome.html (AACT) based in Whitefish. He and other scientists have engineered a system that uses industrial waste, like wood chips from the lumber manufacturing process, to cultivate algae and convert it into methane.
