Education opens doors: Credentials beyond high-school diploma crucial for a lucrative future

On average, 70 percent of teenagers in the United States move directly from high-school hallways to college campuses, according to government statistics.

Where the other 30 percent go with their diplomas is splintered into dozens of categories, including the military, job corps, and travel. Tight budgets sometimes mean paying for higher education can be too heavy a burden. Some choose to jump immediately into the work force.

But those looking for a job are in for tough times, like everyone else: The unemployment rate for recent high-school graduates is 33.4 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s one of the highest percentages for any age group.

It’s tougher still in a place like Missoula, where the joke is that most baristas have a master’s degree.
