The Sustainable Communities Lecture Series- U of M Sept. 3 to Dec. 10, 2002
This series offers an overview of what a “sustainable community” might look like. The
series is a one-credit pass/no pass course for University of Montana students (EVST
495.1, CRN 73386) and is open to the public as well.
Time: 7-9 pm.
Place: UM, Gallagher Business Building 123. (Except Nov. 7)

Sept. 24 – Dale Horton, Sustainable Energy Program, National Center for Appropriate Technology
“Energy Patterns: Renewable by Design.”
Oct. 1 – Mathis Wackernagel, Redefining Progress, “Lighten Up: Getting Serious About Sustainability
With the Ecological Footprint.”
Oct. 8 – Tim Davis, Montana Smart Growth Coalition, “Thriving Communities in the Big Sky: Making
Montana’s Smart Growth Future a Reality.”
Oct. 15 – Ren Essene, HomeWord “Sustainable and Affordable Housing: Lessons from
HomeWORD.”
Oct. 22 – Steve Loken, Loken Builders/National Audubon Society, “Europe’s Urban Ecology: A View
from Montana.”
Oct. 29 – Bob Giordano, FreeCycles/Missoula Institute for Sustainable Transportation “Moving
Missoula: Models for Achieving Sustainable Transportation.”
Nov. 5 – No lecture
Nov. 7 – David Orr, Oberlin College “Designing a World that Works.” Presentation is in the North
Urey Underground Lecture Hall, with a reception to follow in Davidson Honors College.
Nov. 12 – Betsy Hands, UM EVST Grad Student “From Recycling to Ecodemia: The Maturing of the
Campus Environmental Movement.”
Nov. 19 – Tom Elliot, rancher, “Sex, Goats and Desolation: Transforming Your Relationship with
Agriculture, Community and Local Economics.”
Nov. 26 – No lecture
Dec. 3 – Susan Anderson, UM Business School, “Commerce and the Sustainable Community.”
Dec. 10 – Greg Oliver, Missoula County Health Dept. “Measuring Sustainability: Indicators As A
Strategic Tool.”
