NBC Montana Digging Prompts Senator Tester Bill To Take Back Federal Funds

Paying down the federal debt is tougher than you might think. When a Montana community decided to give federal money back to pay down the debt, it took a reporter, an NBC Montana story and an act of Congress to get it done. Now, we’re following up.

Here are the facts NBC Montana first brought you last October: The community of Evergreen, just northeast of Kalispell, handed back nearly $600,000 in federal funds and wanted it applied to the federal debt. Former U.S. Senator Conrad Burns secured the money for Evergreen sewer improvements. Evergreen couldn’t come up with enough for the project, so the district wanted it used to pay down the national debt.

We wanted to know what happened to that money, and it seems we stirred the pot.
