University of Montana Tech Transfer Director, Joe Fanguy, Touts Research at City Club Missoula Forum

Anyone who has experienced knee pain or knows someone who has had a stroke or used dish detergent should know that University of Montana faculty members are working to advance technology to treat these ailments and protect the environment.

UM in recent years has emphasized the research component of its academic mission, and Joe Fanguy, director of the school’s Office of Technology Transfer http://www.umt.edu/research/techtransfer/ , was hired 18 months ago to help professors and researchers develop ideas into marketable products.

UM has 50 patents or patent applications working their way through the lengthy process, Fanguy said on Monday during a noon presentation at City Club Missoula http://www.cityclubmissoula.org/ . Those patents, when partnered with private industries, sometimes become businesses that are located in Missoula, create jobs and may eventually generate revenue for the university.
