Class teaches Montana kids how to build their own fly rods

For most of the boys, it’s a chance to work on something beyond a model rocket or a model World War II bomber.

"These rods will be $300 rods when they’re done," said Ron Fisher, a volunteer fly rod instructor with the Magic City Fly Fishers.

The eight boys in Fisher’s class, all age 13, have been spending Tuesday and Thursday evenings for the past few months building their own fly rods, which they’ll finish up and use this summer.

It’s a once-a-year class offered by the Magic City Fly Fishers and open to any youth 13 or older on a first-come, first-served basis. The class costs $65. The two instructors — Fisher and Mike Casey — volunteer their time.
