Loyola Sacred Heart High School of Missoula, Montana speech and debate team wins 28th consecutive state title

The Loyola Sacred Heart High School http://lshhs.missoulacatholicschools.org/ speech and debate team has the longest active high-school winning streak in the country.

The Rams captured its 28th consecutive Class B state title on Saturday at the Class B/C state speech and debate meet in Townsend. Loyola dominated the other 46 schools, finishing with a score of 190. Shepherd High School placed second with 50 points and Cutbank took third with 44 points.

Gardiner High School claimed the Class C state team title with 59 points.

Loyola debate coach Stergios takes team to state for last time

If Matt Stergios and his Loyola Sacred Heart speech, drama and debate team fail to win the state championship in Townsend on Saturday, it will break the longest active high-school winning streak in the nation.

But not necessarily a coach’s heart.

Stergios’ heart will break only if the 27-year dynasty comes to an end because his kids didn’t give it their best.

"I love it when my seniors come up to me and say, ‘I gave it my everything, and there’s nothing else I could have done,’ " said Stergios, his eyes welling with tears and the knowledge that he’ll never hear them again as coach – as he will retire at season’s end.
