CHANCELLOR

Montana Tech of the University of Montana invites applications and nominations for the position of Chancellor. The Chancellor serves as the chief executive officer of the campus and reports to the President of The University of Montana. The Chancellor is responsible for all aspects of campus administration, including program and resource development.

Montana Tech is known for its academic excellence and student success. The institution has consistently been recognized nationally as a premier college of science and technology. Originally founded over 100 years ago as the Montana State School of Mines, it is one of four affiliated campuses of The University of Montana and today offers an array of accredited academic programs through the masters’ level.

Degrees are offered in 23 baccalaureate disciplines and 16 master’s fields, as well as an interdisciplinary doctorate. Among the baccalaureate programs are nine ABET accredited engineering degrees in petroleum engineering, mining engineering, geological engineering, metallurgical engineering, geophysical engineering, environmental engineering, electrical engineering, general engineering, and software engineering. Baccalaureate degrees in biology, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, computer science, networking technology, nursing, health care informatics, occupational safety and health, business, technical communication, and liberal studies compliment the engineering degrees.

In addition, Montana Tech’s College of Technology provides associate, certificate, and workforce development programs to the business, healthcare, and technical education sectors of the community and region. Enrollment is currently at record levels with over 2,800 students. A 16:1 student to faculty ratio and an average class size of 19 facilitate the relationships that lead to student success. Students learn directly from professors, many with industry experience.

Research on the campus and the associated Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology has grown steadily and now approaches $14,000,000 annually. Examples of active research projects include the ecology of deer mice and Hantavirus, seismic studies of sea ice in Antarctica, low cost titanium fabrication, geochemistry of acid mine waters, and real time control of electric grids.

The Montana Tech campuses are located in Southwest Montana, in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, midway between Yellowstone and Glacier National Park in the historic city of Butte. There are abundant opportunities for recreation including skiing and other winter sports, camping, hiking, biking and world-class fishing.

Montana Tech’s next chancellor will present an established record of senior-level leadership in higher education; a record of academic and educational achievement; demonstrated skills in strategic planning, fiscal and personnel management; a commitment to institutional quality; the ability to work constructively and collegially with a variety of internal and external constituencies; and credentials qualifying a candidate for tenure at the rank of Professor at Montana Tech. Possession of an earned doctorate is highly desirable. However, a candidate without a doctorate who has an extraordinary record of relevant leadership will be given serious consideration.

Greenwood/Asher and Associates is assisting Montana Tech in the search. Application review will begin February 15, 2011. Nominations should include the name, position, address, and telephone number of the nominee. Application materials should include a brief letter of introduction including a discussion of the candidate’s educational philosophy, relevant work history, and the basis for interest in the position; curriculum vitae; and the names of at least five references with all appropriate contact information.

Submission of materials as MS Word attachments is strongly encouraged. The position will remain open until filled. The projected starting date is July 1, 2011.
