Utah entrepreneurs advised to ‘think big’ and ‘dominate’

Top officials from some of the nation’s leading technology companies and venture capital firms said Friday that Utah entrepreneurs need to think big and look outside the state’s borders for support.

The state Legislature also needs to continue to support higher education, said speakers attending a roundtable discussion in Salt Lake City organized by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch. Their discussions with Utah entrepreneurs at the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah were closed to the public.

In a session to answer questions from the media, the officials said Utah has the core infrastructure of universities and other institutions to support high-tech industries, as well as a talent pool and a history of successful high-tech businesses.

To add to that success, Shane Robison, executive vice president at Hewlett-Packard Co., said the state needs to persist in its support of schools that produce engineers and other employees who make the high-tech businesses work.
