Wave to Your Fellow Travelers – Simple act on the road can bring us together

OK, so the election is over, and with luck the discord that we are all feeling is coming to an end. Well, if not an end, maybe we can move away from open hostilities.

When momma and I lived up the West Fork (Darby) many years ago, almost every oncoming vehicle (mostly trucks) waved acknowledgement, like a silent hello. By the time we left the West Fork in the late ’90s, the tradition, this acknowledgment of neighbor to neighbor, became less and less prevalent, to the point that the 14-mile trip to U.S. Highway 93 sometimes didn’t get one measly wave.

Still living in Darby, but at the top of Tin Cup Road, this tradition is still practiced, but occasionally we get the "no wavers." Interestingly enough, when traveling in other rural communities it is not unusual for one pickup truck to wave to another, even when you’re an interloper. Yes, cars can wave to cars; it’s in the rules!
