Wind turbine manufacturer Nordic Windpower gets $5.6 million in incentives from Missouri for the company to leave Pocatello

California-based wind turbine manufacturer Nordic Windpower http://www.nordicwindpower.com/ is moving its headquarters and production operations to a site at Kansas City International Airport.

Nordic Windpower makes two-bladed wind turbines for the rapidly growing wind-energy market. Its current headquarters in Berkeley, Calif., and an assembly facility in Pocatello, will be moving to Kansas City.

The company came to Pocatello in 2008. At the assembly plant, it makes nacelles, which sit on top of the turbines’ towers and include the gear box, generator, controller, brake and low- and high-speed shafts.

CEO Tom Carbone says most of Nordic Windpower’s customers are in the Midwest and the company has to haul 40 tons of material back and forth from Idaho to make one nacelle.

He tells the Idaho State Journal that being close to the customers is a good rule for any company.
