Numbers show rural small-business boom

"I don’t know if it’s business entrepreneurship or survival."

Mike McCurry heard that a lot of small businesses are starting up in rural South Dakota. So he started assembling and studying data.

Sure enough, the number of nonfarm business proprietors is up in many counties across the state.

"We’re finding that individual proprietorships are increasing faster than jobs are in most counties," says McCurry, who holds a doctorate and is an Extension sociologist at South Dakota State University.
