Google at the University of Montana

Elizabeth Lathrop, a senior studying Management Information Systems at the School of Business Administration (SoBA) and the President of the Montana Information Systems Association student group, was chosen to be a Student Ambassador at Google. The program was set up to bring awareness of Google products and apps to campuses all around the country. Elizabeth was the only student from the state of Montana to be invited to the summit this past summer at Google headquarters in Mountain View, California, and she joined 150 students from around the country.

The first day had the students fully immersed in the day-to-day activities going on behind the closed doors of Google. They had an inside look at product demonstrations, Google apps such as Google Voice and Google Maps, and many other impressive products and technologies that the company has to offer. Elizabeth participated in brainstorming, event planning, competitions and PR sessions with her peers, and she gained insight into how Google operates and what makes it a successful business.

Not only did Elizabeth gain a deeper understanding of how the business is run, she was able to enjoy some fun at Google as well. In addition to food and accommodations, each student received free gifts – or "Google swag" – such as t-shirts, messenger bags, and even Droid phones complete with the Software Development Kit to develop personalized apps on the phone. Google employees took the students out bowling as a reward for making it through their first day.

Elizabeth gained so much more than just some free gifts and a trip to a great city, though. She said, "The whole experience was a lot of fun and I made great connections with some of the best and brightest students around." Now that Elizabeth is connected at Google, SoBA and other UM students have an opening to networking opportunities with a business that is going to play a major role in shifting the US into the 21st century.

Elizabeth will continue to promote Google at UM and work to connect our best students with recruiters at Google. To find out more about upcoming events and giveaways for Google, follow the link below to visit the Facebook page she created.
