University of Montana’s proposed biomass boiler will save $1M a year

The Missoulian has printed several letters to the editor in recent weeks that questioned, and with good reason, what the University of Montana http://www.umt.edu is up to in regards to a proposed biomass-fueled boiler on campus. I would like to take this opportunity to go on the record to lay out what is proposed.

Beginning several years ago when then-UM President George Dennison signed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, the University of Montana has been on a serious quest to reduce its carbon footprint. This journey has taken us from the installation of compact fluorescent lights, the use of ground-water cooling, a campuswide energy conservation campaign and finally, to a serious look at using biomass to fuel our steam plant in lieu of natural gas.

Beginning in April of this year, UM began its investigation of biomass gasification technology using wood instead of natural gas to fire our steam plant. This journey led us to select Nexterra, a high-tech biomass gasification firm located in Vancouver, B.C., as our technology provider. The complexity of the project also led us to partner with McKinstry, a Seattle-based performance contracting/construction firm, whose job it will be to bring the project from concept to reality.
