Missoula project to tally retail space downtown

If you wanted to open up a candy store in downtown Missoula, you might ask some questions first. Is there already a sweet shop? How much retail space could you rent?

Rod Austin, with the Business Improvement District, said both the BID and the Missoula Downtown Association http://www.missouladowntown.com/ get those inquiries, and these days, more and more frequently.

"MDA and BID have been getting more and more calls from around the country from people interested in businesses or real estate," Austin said.

The problem is, no one has thorough answers to their questions. So this week, a team supported by the BID, MDA and the Missoula Redevelopment Agency http://www.ci.missoula.mt.us/index.aspx?nid=86 will begin taking a detailed inventory of retail space downtown.

Austin said the result should be a catalogue of sorts that serves as an economic development tool for Missoula. He also wants downtown property and business owners to know their individual information will remain confidential.
