Associated Students of the University of Montana to review University of Montana College of Technology’s trailer classrooms

They call it “the math shack.” It’s the trailer in which some students at the University of Montana College of Technology are forced to take algebra while administrators find space for the facility’s overflow of students. Some trailers don’t have enough outlets or computers to accomodate all the students, but ASUM is planning to start the process of changing that reality.

ASUM President Ashleen Williams will have senators vote tomorrow night on two higher-education resolutions that could significantly upgrade the facilities at the COT.

The COT provides occupational and technical education degrees for students who opt for a less traditional approach to college. With five academic departments and degrees ranging from radiology to heavy equipment operation, the COT’s fast track learning programs provide valuable career training for almost 2,000 alternative students.

But the College of Technology is only built to accommodate 700 students. Since not all of the students can fit in the main COT building, many take classes in trailers that often lack amenities and space that UM’s main campus provides. The College of Technology West still doesn’t have wireless Internet access.
