Congressman Outlines Plans to Boost Montana’s Economy

Bringing more jobs to Montana through international trade is the focus of a talk by U.S. Representative Denny Rehberg August 24 at Noon in Missoula. The Montana Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the event through its international trade division.

“It’s more important than ever for Montana businesses to have the tools they need to expand their businesses both here and overseas,” said Rehberg. “I’m looking forward to this trade event to talk with business owners and the organizations that work with them to make Montana businesses more competitive around the globe.”

Montana’s exports had been growing substantially over the last few years prior to the global economic slowdown. Montana’s commodity exports reached a record high of over $2 billion in 2008. The global recession reduced those numbers to $1.4 billion – still the third highest sales on record.

“Now is absolutely the right time to lay the groundwork for future trade,” noted Webb Brown, President/CEO of the Montana Chamber. “This includes passing pending Free Trade Agreements. We can achieve President Obama’s ‘National Export Initiative’ of doubling exports in five years if we take action now.”

Co-sponsors for the luncheon include the Montana World Trade Center, Montana District Export Council, Montana Manufacturing Extension Center, and TradeRoots, the international trade arm of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The public is invited to attend the luncheon talk at the Wingate Inn in Missoula. Cost of the accompanying lunch is $20. For more information and registration, go to
