How the West Won Me

Some homes away from home, whether owned or rented, are extensions of people’s primary residence that allow them to carry on as usual in a refreshingly different location. Thus, chic, striving Manhattanites become chic, striving Hamptonites, and suburbanites enjoy flipping burgers at the lake or in the mountains instead of in their usual backyards. Other vacation homes, however, are so radically different that they become labs for experimenting with another way of life altogether. Our house in Dubois (DOO-boyz), Wyo., which is a small cowboy town southeast of Yellowstone National Park, falls into that category.

The more we adapt to our new niche, the more Mike and I see that like Wranglers, snap-button shirts and country-and-western music, the West’s domestic architecture really suits its rugged setting.
