Montana State University earns accolades for taking research to the bank

Montana State University has broken its own record for research grant dollars spent in the fiscal year that ended in June. The total of $109.5 million beat the old record, set in 2006, of $103 million, a 6.3 percent increase over the old high mark.

And that’s a pretty big deal.

Debate continues within the MSU academic community over whether the university places too much emphasis on research, at the expense of resources devoted to educating students. That argument won’t be settled any time soon, but for southwestern Montanans outside university circles, MSU’s continued success in research can’t be greeted as anything but good news.

While some of the university research spending certainly goes out of state for specialized materials and equipment, a great deal of that money is paid in salaries to scientists and their graduate assistants who choose to make their homes here in order to be part of that research.
