Qwest Asks to Expand in 4 States including Montana

DENVER (AP) – Qwest Communications International on Friday filed an
application with the Federal Communications Commission ( news – web
sites) to offer long-distance service in Washington, Utah, Montana and
Wyoming.

The Denver-based company already has a similar application pending in
five other states in its 14-state region in the West. It plans to ask for permission to offer long-distance
service in its five remaining states by the fall.

Last week, regulators in Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Nebraska and North Dakota filed formal recommendations
supporting Qwest’s bid.

Qwest was forced to give up its long-distance business in 2000 when it merged with U S West. once a part
of AT&T Corp.

The companies that were created by the breakup of the AT&T phone monopoly in 1984 were barred by a
court decision from offering long-distance service until they opened their local markets to competitors.

Other phone companies have captured between 8 percent to 29 percent of the local phone market in
Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, North Dakota and Nebraska.
