Montana Senator Jon Tester: Waive some tuition to bring specialist physicians to Libby

Doctors working in the fields of asbestos-related disease could have much of their medical school tuition paid under a proposal intended to bring specialized expertise to Libby’s health care community.

"This is going to really open some doors," said Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont. http://tester.senate.gov/ , who introduced the measure Monday.

Since 1970, Tester said, a federal program called the National Health Service Corps has helped recruit physicians to "underserved" markets – generally rural states such as Montana – by offering medical school scholarships or loan repayment. The program, however, is limited only to general practitioners, Tester said.

Tester’s proposal would amend that legislation to allow certain specialists to participate, so long as they agree to work in an area designated as a "public health emergency."
