Homeland Security Expo attended by Bozeman companies Ligocyte and Scientific Materials

The show was an opportunity for the small companies to explain their new technologies and discuss ways to get their products to market. They were invited by Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont., and were two of only about 50 American businesses involved.

"We feel pretty lucky to get two Montana companies here. Literally all the 50 states are represented," said Rob Bargatze, Ligocyte’s chief scientific officer and executive vice president. "We’ve been talking with a lot of companies that are looking for opportunities to work with companies working in the area of homeland security."

Ligocyte has been working with the U.S. Army on biowarfare solutions for about 18 months, Bargatze said. Through the expo, he met with a larger company working on parallel projects and discussed collaborating to make bringing the projects to market more economical.

For example, a company that makes a system to deliver compounds to various surfaces in the body may partner with Ligocyte on a vaccine delivery system.

Scientific Materials manufactures several products relevant to homeland security, said a representative of the company. The products include materials for high-energy lasers, radiation-hardened materials for space-based lasers and eyesafe laser transmitters for imaging and range-finder systems.

Company president, Ralph Hutcheson, attended the expo but was not available for comment Wednesday.

While in D.C., Bargatze said he was going to use the time to visit an Army hospital and discuss expanding Ligocyte’s programs.

"We have a couple of opportunities to broaden our relations back in the D.C. area," he said.
