Father’s love creates communication device for autistic son – The Cyrano Communicator

Ray Schmidt didn’t know it eight years ago, but while trying to make it easier for his autistic son, Jon, to feel more comfortable in restaurants and other public places, he unwittingly created a communication device for people with disabilities. That effort has mushroomed into a burgeoning micro-business in Lancaster.

Schmidt said he found that by having Jon view video clips downloaded onto a computer – which he would select from a menu of photo icons – his son remained occupied.

“He was in control of all of his entertainment,” Schmidt said. “That was almost like a cure for us. We could take him virtually anywhere.”
