Holding on to Melstone, Montana: Once-thriving town asks COT students to plan restoration of historic building

There’s not much left of downtown Melstone.

Two- and three-story buildings once lined a couple of blocks of Main Street, but now only two buildings remain.

On the east side of Main is the Lazy JC Drug & Hardware store, its old brick walls shrouded by a facade of steel siding. The only other building, directly across the street, is the Sportsman Bar and Café, closed for the past seven years but retaining its original brickwork nearly a century after its construction.

“We’ve got this iconic building on Main Street, and it’s in danger of not being there anymore,” said Adele Field, a member of the Melstone History Grant Project Committee.

That’s why the committee got in touch with Tim Urbaniak’s Drafting and Design Capstone class in the College of Technology at Montana State University Billings.
