‘Green’ plan takes advantage of slime: Scientists, loggers look to generate energy, fertilizer in Columbia Falls

The science geeks and the loggers, gathered there around the mechanical cow, looked nothing at all like Exxon executives.

For one thing, they were all wearing hard hats. For another, they kept talking about anaerobic bioreactors and nitrogenous fertilizer and organic carbon engines.

And yet, as their plans unfolded there in the logyard, next to the churning algae tanks, it was not difficult to imagine that, together, they just might be tomorrow’s energy tycoons.

The loggers have lots of leftover wood chips. The science geeks have that mechanical cow. Together, with a little help from the sun, they think they can generate power, heat, steam and the finest organic fertilizer on the market.

Actually, they know they can do it. They just need a million bucks to get started.
