Government becomes biggest employer in Montana, but what does it mean?

An online article recently published by the Montana Policy Institute finds government jobs now make the largest employment sector in the state. The article cites the latest monthly employment figures released by the state Department of Labor and Industry.

Federal, state, and local government moved into first place over trade, transportation and utilities between December 2009 and the first months of this year. The February 2010 numbers show 89,300 government jobs versus 89,000 trade, transportation, and utilities jobs.

But Labor Department economist Aaron McNay says looking at figures over a couple months does not indicate a trend.
