UM professor Steven Running honored by American Geophysical Union

To a scientist it’s the equivalent of a sports figure getting inducted into the hall of fame. So University
of Montana Professor Steve Running was more than happy to be inducted recently as a fellow of the
American Geophysical Union in Washington, D.C.

By University Relations

Running, director of UM’s NASA-affiliated Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group, was one of 41
distinguished scientists selected for the honor this year. American Geophysical Union members
selected as fellows have attained an acknowledged eminence in a branch of the geophysical
sciences.

"These awards normally go to scientists at the big research universities like Princeton, Stanford and
Berkeley," Running said. "This honor does show that we can do world-class research here at UM and
be recognized for it."

The American Geophysical Union is the largest earth science research society in the world, with
more than 38,000 members in 117 countries. The number of fellows selected annually is limited to no
more than 0.1 percent of the current organization membership. Candidates are nominated by their
peers, and the selection process requires letters of recommendation from existing fellows, as well as
a two-step panel evaluation process.

Running holds a doctoral degree in forest ecophysiology from Colorado State University.
