California Education: "a denied dream"

Thursday’s "Day of Action" in California was all the more striking because of what is at stake: the potential unraveling of a higher-education system known as one of finest and most accessible in the world.

"It’s really a denied dream," said Jack Scott, chancellor of the 2.9 million-student California Community Colleges.

California’s public university system is the model for the rest of the nation, according to Terry Hartle of the American Council on Education. It established, half a century ago, a pathway to higher education for all Californians: a system of 10 research universities, open to roughly the top 10 percent of students; a system of 23 regional state universities, open to the top one-third; and a massive community college system, open to all.
