Oregon startups find success — some find it elsewhere

Last year was terrific for some of Portland’s hottest tech companies.

Jive Software enjoyed a surge in revenue and an infusion of venture capital. Interactive TV company Ensequence landed $20 million in outside funding and partnerships with major TV networks. And online questionnaire specialist SurveyMonkey got new owners committed to bankrolling rapid growth.

Something else the three had in common: They moved their top executives out of state.

Oregon’s struggles at nurturing startups are well-known and well-documented. Entrepreneurs complain they can’t find enough talented executives here, or enough financial backing, and so they go elsewhere.
