The University of Montana NASA’s Earth Observing System (EOS) Education Project Upcoming GIS Events schedule for 2002

Here are the classes and events available in Montana for 2002.

C&I 495/595.1 – Introduction to ESRI’s ArcView GIS 3.x: "The Power of Desktop Geospatial Analysis"

http://www.eoscenter.com

ESRI’s ArcView GIS software is the most popular desktop Geographic Information System software in the world. With well over two hundred thousand copies in use today, ArcView is revolutionizing how people understand geographical information. In this course, students will be introduced to fundamental concepts of ArcView GIS in order to provide a solid foundation to future experience with GIS environments. Students will integrate data in new ways, dynamically link with a GIS database, create and present maps, and learn to view and work with spatial information. Students will work closely with their instructor to discover the power of ArcView. Finally, students will work to combine spatial data into a course project that will direct them towards meeting the needs of their individual profession.

C&I 495/595.2 – Intermediate ArcView GIS 3.x: "Going Further With ArcView GIS and Exploring Geographic Data"
Continuing where Introduction to ArcView GIS left off, this course not only expands on the power of ArcView GIS, but it also teaches students how to work with geospatial data. Geospatial data comes in many different forms, and it most likely needs to be manipulated to be used in ArcView GIS. Students will learn how to look for GIS data on the Internet and elsewhere, how to download and import GIS data into ArcView, how to use different GIS data sources together, how to create their own GIS data, and how to assemble these pieces into a lesson or a project. Students will work with a variety of geospatial data including remotely sensed imagery from NASA satellites. Students will also learn about image compression technology — specifically working with MrSID™. In the process of learning about all the different types of GIS data that can be used in ArcView GIS, students will learn about map projections and ArcView, map scale, and more advanced data processing procedures.

Exploring Geographic Information Systems and ArcView GIS

This 15-hour workshop is designed for educators and will provide an overview of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Participants will be introduced to basic GIS concepts and mapping issues and will work hands-on with ArcView 3.2a, a powerful and popular desktop GIS program from Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI). Handouts, web-based resources, and other supportive classroom materials related to a variety of curricular areas will be provided. No prerequisites are required to enroll in this workshop, however some background in basic computer operations and file management is helpful.

Location: MSU Billings
Dates: June 21-22, 2002
Cost: $125
Credit: One undergraduate/graduate credit; available as graded credit or on a pass/not pass basis.
Instructors: Charlotte Lauerman, Jeff Crews, Marlene Zentz
For more information: email Charlotte Lauerman at [email protected]
To Register: Call Renee or Kelly to register: 657-2203

Second Steps: Building Projects Using Geographic Information Systems and ArcView GIS

This 15-hour workshop builds on GIS concepts and skills introduced in the Exploring Geographic Information Systems and ArcView GIS workshop, though enrollment in this workshop is not a prerequisite. Participants will work with more complex GIS operations related to ArcView 3.2a, explore a variety of data sources (including GPS data), and build GIS projects from scratch that are pertinent to their curricular area. Participants will also examine GIS in relationship to problem-based learning and will look at professional uses of GIS in the workplace. Handouts, web-based resources, and other supportive classroom materials related to a variety of curricular areas will be provided.

Location: MSU Billings
Dates: June 24-25, 2002
Cost: $125
Credit: One undergraduate/graduate credit; available as graded credit or on a pass/not pass basis.

GIS 4 MT Rollout / GIS Training

The Montana state wide ArcView GIS and ERDAS Image Analysis site license (GIS4MT) is an agreement between ESRI, ERDAS®, Inc., and NASA’s EOS Education Project at the University of Montana to provide free ArcView GIS software to all public schools in the state of Montana. This agreement is the first of its kind in the entire United States. The software allows teachers and students to capitalize on GIS technology to solve real-world problems while promoting interactive learning. Those schools interested in taking advantage of this incredible offer need to send a representative from their school to a primary contact/GIS training in their area. At the training, the contact will get introductory training in the software. In addition, the agreement will be reviewed and the license will be distributed. Data and other training opportunities will also be presented at the primary contact meeting.

Upcoming primary contact meetings:
Location: Dates:
Missoula 9/19-9/20, 2002
Glendive 9/26-9/27, 2002
Billings 10/10-10/11, 2002
