First Webmaster Certificate Recipient, Steve Hug, Launches New Career – The Lifelong Learning Center, Missoula County Public Schools Adult Education Division

The Lifelong Learning Center, Missoula County Public Schools Adult Education Division http://thelifelonglearningcenter.com/ , is proud to announce that Steve Hug is the first recipient of the new Webmaster Certificate.

One year ago, The Lifelong Learning Center began a new Webmaster Certificate program. Students have two years to complete all the required classes (180 hours of instruction) and prove that they can build a small website from scratch with specific requirements for the design and documentation. The first Webmaster Certificate recipient, Steve Hug, completed the program in one year, and has worked as the webmaster and developer on several websites during his year of study. Steve’s certificate project was the new website design for The Lifelong Learning Center.

Steve Hug was the piano tuner for organizations, including the University Music Department and the Missoula Public Schools, for 35 years. Tuning a piano requires travel to the pianos; so the job required hours of travel around Western Montana. As Steve neared retirement, he was looking for an interesting job that would allow him to work from home.
Webmaster certificate students are encouraged to find clients within the industry they know best, and Steve has followed his interests. One of Steve’s first website projects was a rebuild for American Orff-Schulwerk Association in Ohio http://www.aosa.org/ .

According to the AOSA website About Us page, “Schulwerk, as envisioned by composer Carl Orff, is a way to teach and learn music and movement.” His latest project is an upgrade on the American Recorder Society http://www.americanrecorder.org/ website. As with many websites, this one was acceptable on the design side, but needed a great deal of help fixing links and other parts of the site which were incorrect. The organization’s previous web developer had fees that were out of reach; so, they asked Steve for help.

The Webmaster Certificate was designed to give students the basic information they need to maintain small websites. Skills taught include website structures, images for the web, photography for the web, search engine optimization and an introduction to web programming. The classes give many students a starting point to experiment until they advance beyond the scope of the certificate.

For further information about the Webmaster Certificate, contact instructor Nora McDougall-Collins. Please call The Lifelong Learning Center at 406-549-8765, and Nora can return your call when she is not in class.
