Montana schools hope to save green by going green

School officials fret over their school budgets, always conscious of keeping it balanced.

After salaries and benefits, energy is the second biggest expenditure in many school budgets, and administrators are looking for ways to trim their energy costs — and using those efficiencies as teaching moments for students.

Hundreds of school representatives were in Helena Wednesday for the 2010 Energy Summit: Repowering Montana Schools http://www.sammt.org/sammt/site/default.asp , where energy efficiency experts from the region came armed with information and strategies.

Schools here seeking sustainable solutions

Recycling bins are popping up around campus, students are turning off the lights when they leave their residence hall rooms and new buildings are more energy efficient than predecessors. Thanks to the interest of Montana State University students and the hard work of many in the MSU community, the campus is becoming more sustainable.

Billings schools also push recycling

The recycling habit is going strong in Billings schools. From the preschoolers at Billings Head Start to the leaders of the Montana State University Billings Student Initiated Recycling Program, young people are getting into green routines in school buildings throughout the community. And their efforts are making a real difference by sending thousands of pounds of waste to recycling bins instead of area landfills.
