Asia gaining on U.S. in science spending

U.S. science retains the lead, but Asia is surging in the global $1.1 trillion research and development enterprise, says a federal report.

The National Science Foundation’s Science & Engineering Indicators 2010 report finds rapid international science and technology expertise growth, particularly in China and other Asian nations. "The world science and technology enterprise has grown quite considerably and has shifted," said NSF’s Rolf Lehming. "The U.S. is maintaining its leadership but with a gradual erosion of its position."
