Business Groups Win Out over Montana Greenhouse Gas Proposals

The Montana Board of Environmental Review has formally dropped plans to start developing the state’s first greenhouse gas rules.

The board had been planning to take public comment on the issue and draft regulations in response to pending federal Environmental Protection Agency mandates.

The Montana state Board of Environmental Review cancels move to initiate state rules for greenhouse gases

The state Board of Environmental Review today reluctantly canceled its move to devise new state rules on greenhouse gases, saying the effort is moot after a panel of legislators last week blocked it for six months.

Board members said their December decision to move on state greenhouse-gas rules was meant to protect Montana businesses from potentially onerous regulations coming down from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

"I felt that (state regulators) clearly were looking at Montana’s interest and trying to get ahead on this," said board chairman Joe Russell of Kalispell, the chief public health officer in Flathead County.
