Wyoming Business Council officials make pitch for governor’s proposal Keep funding economic development, legislators told

Despite budget constraints, the state needs to continue to invest in business and infrastructure to build the economy, Wyoming Business Council representatives told legislators Wednesday morning.

During a hearing on the Business Council budget, members of the Joint Appropriations Committee had a number of questions about the council’s priorities, particularly the role of community facilities in the overall economic development plan.

They also questioned whether the agency, created in 1998 from about 25 separate state entities, continues to even be necessary.

Gov. Dave Freudenthal, meanwhile, recommended a 2011-12 budget for "business-ready community" and community facility projects that is 35 percent lower than the current allocation.

Reese also mentioned that the agency is getting calls from California concerning business prospects in Wyoming. He said later that the agency has received more calls in the last six months from out-of-state businesses, including California, than it has in the past.
