Stimulus Funded Tennis Courts in Bozeman Draw Ire of Montana Governor

Federal stimulus money to be spent on new tennis courts in Bozeman is drawing the ire of Montana’s governor.

The brouhaha started with reports that the City of Bozeman was spending about $50,000 of its $621,000 stimulus money on new rubber-tiled courts.

Gov. Brian Schweitzer http://governor.mt.gov/ lashed out at the idea Tuesday. He says that such an idea would have been laughed out of the building if Bozeman had told the Legislature that’s what it would be using the money for.

Bozeman city officials did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Governor: New Rubber-Tiled Tennis Courts Not Good Use of Funds

Stimulus funds for critical projects and job creation

Governor Schweitzer is asking the City of Bozeman not to spend $49,140 of federal stimulus funds on the installation of new rubber-tiled tennis courts at Bogert Park.

“When I proposed this legislation I wanted to make our drinking water safer so people wouldn’t get sick, our highways safer so you weren’t concerned about your children on the school bus, and buildings more energy efficient to save money in the long run,” said Schweitzer. “That is what was in the original bill I handed the legislature, but they insisted on handing out money all over the state, and now it looks like some of it will be served up on new rubber-tiled tennis courts.”
