More than 130 Montana applicants statewide seek historical preservation grants

Preservation projects vie for funding

When Joan Drennon talks about her property, a small spread in the Helena Valley once known as the Green Meadow Ranch, she mentions names like Harry Child and Robert Reamer.

If you scratch your head and look at her dumbly, she’ll give you a brief lesson in Montana history, explaining how Child ran the Yellowstone Park Co. around 1909, and how Reamer designed a little chalet known as the Old Faithful Inn.

Outside the nation’s first national park, Child once owned the Green Meadow Ranch while Reamer designed it. Given the depth of that history, it isn’t any wonder Drennon has grown a little anxious when it comes to preserving the remnants of her historic property into the future.

“It’s very difficult for an average person to take care of these buildings.” Drennon said simply. “I would like to see them preserved.”
