A longtime University of Montana faculty member has been named
dean of the School of Education, Provost Lois Muir announced today.

Roberta Evans, who has served as interim dean since July 2001, was
hired permanently as the education school’s new leader following a national
search. Muir emphasized the considerable expertise and talent that Evans
brings to the position.

“During the past year, everyone who has worked with Dean Evans has
been impressed with her extraordinary leadership and ability to bring
people together,” Muir said. “She is a welcome addition to our academic team.”

Evans replaces Don Robson, who has been UM’s interim associate
provost for the past year. She brings more than 20 years experience as a
teacher and administrator in K-12 and higher education. Evans came to
Missoula in 1989 after receiving a doctorate in education from the
University of Nevada, Reno.

She served as chair of UM’s educational leadership and counseling
department during 1991-98. Muir said Evans’ administrative approach is one
that emphasizes collaboration, communication and consultation.

“I am thrilled to work with the exemplary faculty, staff and
students in the School of Education and to serve the University in this new
role,” Evans said.
