Excellent Entrepreneurs – Missoula’s C.S. Porter Middle School students put heads together to market The Good Food Store story

What happens when C. S. Porter http://www.mcps.k12.mt.us/portal/Default.aspx?alias=www.mcps.k12.mt.us/portal/porter teachers Allie McFarland and Petey Torma split 15 students into teams of five and then charge them with coming up with an advertising campaign for the Good Food Store http://www.goodfoodstore.com/ ?

The kids had to master still cameras, video cameras and sophisticated software programs. More important, they had to learn to work within a group, give and receive direction, and remember that they were working for someone else.

They also had to design ads that fit with the Good Food Store’s relaxed, low-key approach. Finally, they also had to work under a tight deadline, a deadline that Lund referenced in his comments about the ideal world.

"I’d say the biggest difficulty was the time," said Drew Beck, who led one of the three teams, Team Triumph. "There were just some things that weren’t going to get fixed, and that’s hard because you want it to be perfect."

The students had to produce advertisements in three media – print, television and radio. They spent time at the Good Food Store with marketing director Layne Rolston, and also met with experts in advertising and media.

"Part of the idea was to have them out working in the community," said teacher McFarland.
