Some controversy is surrounding the selection of the new president of Montana State University http://www.montana.edu/ .

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported Friday morning that former finalist Steven Leath claims he withdrew his name over a "strange" selection process before Waded Cruzado-Salas was chosen as the school’s new president.

Leath told the newspaper that he withdrew from contention before university leaders announced their decision to hire someone else. If so, that would mean that Cruzado may have been the last candidate standing when Montana University System officials gave her the job.

One MSU finalist disagrees with regents on who rejected whom

By GAIL SCHONTZLER Chronicle Staff Writer

Steven Leath, formerly a finalist for the presidency at Montana State University, said Thursday that he withdrew from contention before university leaders announced their decision to hire someone else.

If so, that would mean that Waded Cruzado may have been the last candidate standing when Montana University System officials gave her the job.

But the Montana Board of Regents vice chairman, Clay Christian, who was in charge of the presidential search, disagreed with Leath’s description of events.

“That was not the case,” Christian responded. “I think it’s just a misunderstanding.”
